About Malcolm Muronda

Portrait painting of a woman with a wet face by Malcolm Muronda

Painting by Malcolm Muronda

I’m Malcolm Muronda, an artist and author based in the UK. I paint portraits.

I started painting at 16. I taught myself by doing studies, one after another, and painting came naturally. I used to paint for competitions. Now I paint for the love of it.

After I reached for white and black

It was a portrait of Morgan Freeman, and it was going really well. Then I needed some areas lighter and some darker. I reached for white and black, and the painting went flat.

I was really upset. It turned out to be a big learning curve. I learned to mix my own lights and shadows instead.

Malcolm Muronda’s books

I wrote The Lightening Reference Guide and The Shadowing Reference Guide so other painters can avoid the same trap. Reaching for white to lighten and black to darken makes a painting flat. The guides show you what to mix instead, with practical tips for mixing better colours.
